Reversing Severe Underweight with Kangaroo Mother Care

A High-Risk Beginning

On 7 July 2022, Mannat was born weighing 1.5 kg and measuring 48 cm, placing her in the low birth weight category. Born as one of twins, she required immediate nutritional attention while her sibling was healthy. Low birth weight significantly increased her risk of infection, poor weight gain, and prolonged undernutrition.

Introducing Kangaroo Mother Care

By September 2022, Mannat weighed 2.6 kg (51 cm). Growth was slow, and illness episodes were frequent. During the December follow-up, the Project Tushti team and Anganwadi Worker introduced and demonstrated Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC)-sustained skin-to-skin contact to improve warmth, strengthen breastfeeding, and support weight gain. Following regular practice of KMC, illness frequency reduced and feeding stabilised.

Sustained Growth Monitoring

Throughout 2023, Mannat remained in the Severely Underweight (SUW) category with a little gradual improvement. Tushti team ensured continuous growth tracking, repeated home visits, and reinforcement of complementary feeding using Take-Home Ration (THR). By January 2024, her weight had reached 8.7 kg (74 cm), indicating movement toward moderate recovery after nearly eighteen months of consistent supervision.

Transition to Normal Growth

With sustained joint efforts by the mother and consistent guidance by the project team, Mannat entered the Normal category in August 2024 at 9.9 kg (79 cm). At the most recent assessment on 2 September 2024, she weighed 10.1 kg (80 cm) and marked the successful transition from high-risk low birth weight to sustained normal growth.

“My daughter Mannat was born with a very low birth weight of 1.5 kg, and we were very worried about her health. With the support and guidance of the Project Tushti team member and the Anganwadi Worker, I learned about proper feeding and Kangaroo Mother Care. By regularly following their advice and attending growth monitoring, Mannat’s health gradually improved. Today she is healthy, active, and growing normally, and I am very thankful to Project Tushti and the Anganwadi team for their continuous support.”
