The Power Of Continuous Care In Child Malnutrition Recovery

A High-Risk Beginning

Hiral was born in a minority settlement in a joint family of 21 members on 29 June 2020. Hiral was the seventh daughter in a resource-constrained environment largely dependent on casual labour. Her birth weight was 2.0 kg, placing her at immediate nutritional risk. Closely spaced births, limited dietary diversity, and household economic constraints further increased her vulnerability.

Identifying Severe Underweight

In July 2021, the Project Tushti Field Officer assessed Hiral as Severely Underweight (SUW), recording her weight at 7.0 kg and height at 70 cm.

Reinforcing THR and Complementary Feeding

The family was counselled on systematic utilisation of THR, preparation methods to improve acceptability, and elimination of processed foods. Feeding frequency, hygiene, and illness management were reviewed in detail.

Nutritional Reinforcement and Clinical Linkage

To strengthen household dietary diversity, Project Tushti provided a Nutrition Kit containing nutrient-dense food items to supplement regular THR use.

In January 2024, Hiral was assessed at a medical camp organised for severely malnourished children. Clinical evaluation and medication addressed residual health concerns and reinforced the importance of continued monitoring.

Family Engagement

A parent meeting was organised at the Anganwadi by the Block Coordinator under Project Tushti. During this meeting, key topics like complementary feeding, vaccination, breastfeeding, and hygiene were reinforced.

Stabilised Growth

By 16 March 2024, Hiral’s weight had increased to 13.4 kg and her height to 90.5 cm, reflecting a significant shift from her earlier severely underweight status. Her growth trajectory stabilised through sustained convergence between household practices, Anganwadi services, and Project Tushti support.

My daughter Hiral was born with a weight of 2 kg. With regular guidance from Project Tushti team members Firojbhai and Jigishaben, we learned about proper child nutrition and care. Earlier, she was not very active, but now she regularly attends Anganwadi, eats nutritious food including THR dishes, and has become more active. Today, she is very healthy and active. I am thankful to Project Tushti and the Anganwadi team for their support.
